One of the best things about working for yourself is that you can work from anywhere. That means that while my husband commutes back and forth from our house over the summer, I get to stay out here. This swing doubles as my office and my lifeguard perch when the kids are in the pool after camp. Of course, it’s not always that simple. Being home means less dedicated working hours (nothing comes without its sacrifices) and more guilt when I have to step away from the kids repeatedly. I can’t blame my boss. mommyshorts @carlymaltais I actually ran an influencer campaign for a brand once and it was pretty eye opening. What I found was that people charge wildly different amounts which did not correlate with the amount of followers they had. It was just the threshold those people had chosen for whether the job was worth it to them or not. And then I had to decide how badly I wanted that person to participate. Some of the people I chose were based on following and some were based on quality of the content. I’m sure there is standard pricing in other industries but not in this one.

mommyshorts @shinmariah I think it helped that I grew my platform on my blog first and then drove my audience to follow on Instagram. Also, at the very beginning, it really was just me sharing my posts with family and friends and then they shared it and it caught on. It truly was word of mouth and everything grew organically from there.

mommyshorts @_sky0123 this is true! I have someone who manages my brand partnerships, negotiates my deals and helps with contracts. I actually had a contract written by my own lawyer and we try to make brands use that first so then we know we are already ok with the language. And I have Mike as my CFO.

methurt This was very interesting! I appreciated your thoughts on starting a business. I left me job in December and then started my own consulting business in February. To only have my husband be offered a job in Germany. Sometimes I think the universe is telling me to not work for awhile!

mommyshorts @doseofplay I never script my kids so I need brands to understand that when we do videos. Also, if either one of them isn’t feeling it on a particular day, I don’t want to force them. I have a pretty good handle on what they will want to participate in now though!
