Disgustingly unacceptable. I have no other words for this scene, an algae bloom on Lake Erie’s south western shore. The leading contributor of these blooms is excess phosphorus and nitrates from agricultural fertilizer that’s washed into streams as well as distributed via wind during winter months. Pollutants from industrial and pharmaceutical factories are also a link. High temperatures and still air create perfect conditions for algae to proliferate and accumulate at the surface. We continue to see a rapid increase of this in Vermont as well. The agriculture industry is a protected active in Vermont. Where so much of our history thrived in the Milk industry. As a regional planning commissioner and local Zoning Administrator I have to add that in addition to the agricultural influences on this, we also NEED to consider the influence of IMPERVIOUS SURFACES adjacent to water ways. What we are getting is a perfect storm. The soils have less and less area to filtrate any run off. Thus contributing to the problem. We have implemented shoreland protection in Vermont on bodies of water greater than 10 acres. But the regulations only protect 250 feet of shoreland from the mean water level. Which of course is seemingly always dropping lower. Water sources are being found to be contaminated in all corners of our green state. We have actions such as the Vermont Land Trust to help conserve acres from development. Of course the lack of economic growth means higher taxes for our residents. In a town of 48 sq miles and less than 5,000 people we have had a record number of homes without adequate water supply for almost two years now. My own home was affect by sever drought last year while our biggest lake and one of the largest water supplies to many Vermont communities was affected by the algae so early in the year that many times those residents where on boil water notice. Another continued contributing factor to this problem is wastewater facilities in Vermont have been recorded to have dumped over 11 million gallons of untreated wastewater in the lake in 2018!! Lake Champlain has been suffering and continues to this day. Many public beaches are constantly being closed. The problem extends to NY and Canada. We didn’t require wastewater permits on residential development on properties less than ten acres in size until 2007!!!! It’s hard to think that we have been so blind for so long.

I'm not saying blooms are unnatural. It's the chemicals in the algae and in the lakes making it worse. Look up ELA (Experimental Lakes Area). They do testing in freshwater lakes, just outside Kenora, Ontario. They do research on precisely this issue, amongst other things. Algae blooms are normal yes, the fire is a natural occurrence yes, but it does not mean that funding (whether it is a lack or or not) does impact the algae. This issue comes back to the government. I bring up Monsanto because even in manure, there are issues. Seriously, look up ELA and you'll see what I mean. I wouldn't spend all this time writing if I was spewing bullshit.

That is bad. Then lots of zooplancton eat that dominant algae and the system collapses when they all die and other plants couldn't survive without light and do their photosynthesis and the decomposer organisms withdraw the oxygen from the water leaving behind an anoxic ambient and so the fauna couldn't survive, such as fishes. The whole ecosystem is altered and now forms a species poor system.

We must be friends with nature.
We must be at peace with trees, soil, plants and wild animals. We need to learn how to survive in nature.
Because money doesn't pass in the wilderness. But the vibration of love is allows you to stay in world

I find this very upsetting ,as it is something I can't physically do anything about on my own ,it needs governments and presidents etc, to do something about it . Could this be our future world for our future generations? Xx
