Standing in solidarity with protesters on Mauna Kea, protecting the Sacred ‘āina from scientific imperialism. It breaks my heart to see indigenous people and land continue to be dismissed by the state of Hawaii and its wealthy developers.

They scan the universe for potential mass extinction causing threats (look up the Permian Extinction as just one of many). They develop new technologies that make it possible for you and those you love to be saved if you’re lost at sea and land. They develop new technologies used in medicine to save lives. They develop technologies that are among the most vital for studying and combating climate change and environmental threats. They develop technologies that make it possible to warn all Hawaii days before catastrophic hurricanes, swells, and other severe natural disasters strike. If not for telescopes you would not be able to share your message with the world, to draw attention to Hawaii and its people. The Mauna has gifted the Hawaiian people with one of the best places on Earth to not just advance all Hawaii and Hawaiians but lead the entire world into a truly magnificent future. You have this incredible opportunity to lead the world in ways so very few people and cultures can. This is a crowning achievement, not a desecration. I humbly implore you to take up this awesome responsibility and to serve the living of this world. For the dead can bury their own. We will all join them soon enough.

kainanidanielle Mahalo to all who are so supportive and leave kind comments. What the natives are doing up at Mauna Kea is truly inspiring. It is a beautiful community full of aloha and mana, a people who stand to protect our sacred land. On the Mauna they practice tradition and educate the community about the importance of our land and where we come from. Seeing so many negative comments really frustrates me because this “protest” isn’t just about a damn telescope. What our Kupuna and Lāhui are trying to achieve is much more that just fighting against TMT. Hawaiian’s have been mistreated and taken advantage of ever since our monarchy had been illegally overthrown. Much of our land (especially Oahu) does not showcase as much beauty, history or overall culture. Hawaiians have an incredibly strong relationship with the land, there is a lot of respect, a lot of love for it and all it provides us with. As time goes on, little by little, our land is taken from us to build things many of us are not in support of. Our goal is to preserve Hawaii and all that our Kupuna and past leaders wish for future generations to see and experience. If TMT goes up on Mauna Kea, what comes next? What will Hawai’i be 20 years from now?

celluloidsorbet @kuhaas.mommy people like me? My sister is kanaka, a descendant of Chiefess Kipikane and other prominent Hawaiian families (Parker Ranch). I was raised by and around Hawaiians and learned more about the culture and people than my own Irish heritage by far. I do not resent this at all and take great pride in knowing I have a direct blood relation to some of Hawaii’s most important historical and cultural figures. I’ve marched on Hawaiian soil against corporate giants and polluters like Monsanto. I boycott large retail giants like Walmart, that keep Hawaiians stuck in a cycle of poverty, doing more harm to Hawaii and its people than all the observatories on the planet combined could ever possibly do. The observatory staff do more to protect and preserve the one burial site, and what little life there is at the summit, than anyone. It’s because of these observatories that this is possible to do every day.

Worst, you spread more fake news claiming or insinuating #tmt is wealthy real estate developers. It's a telescope to advance science and humanity. So what you are doing now only create more opposition argument and muddying what is already a complicated debate. The wealth real estate developers are the ones that build all those lavish homes YOU own throughout the world, displacing the working class. Maunakea is all about land, culture, science, and government intrusion, ancestry. I love the US, but they lied to the Hawaiians before, and they are doing it again. Shame on you #leonardodicaprio

kurtcbr The organisers of the TMT have negotiated and compromised time after time. 5 telescopes will be removed to allow 1. The TMT will be the most advanced telescope ever build. If the JCMT on Mauna Kea assisted in constructing the first image of a supermassive blackhole, just think about the discoveries that the TMT will take. The NIMBYism of the 'protectors' who wish to see it built at the not ready Canary Islands site are delaying scientific discoveries and are not willing to make any compromise, no matter how reasonable the TMT organisers will be. Now a mob is disregarding due legal process and hypocrites like LD hail them as heroes. Just because you shout louder, doesn't make you right...
