Toni Morrison was unsparing in her depiction of people who would use language to evil ends. In her Nobel Prize acceptance speech, she warned of the virulence of the demagogue, pointing to “infantile heads of state” who speak only “to those who obey, or in order to force obedience.” Now, the United States has a President who has spoken “of Mexican ‘rapists,’ of ‘caravans’ filled with encroaching ‘aliens,’ ” who “directed invective at African-Americans, Muslims, women, and immigrants, and at legislators of color,” David Remnick writes. At the link in our bio, read Remnick on how President Trump bears out Morrison’s warnings about the violence of language.

Same is happening in Italy, our interior minister Matteo Salvini has been spreading hoaxes and fueling hate towards African immigrants for years. He, too, calls them rapists and criminals, he won't let them land in our territory (they try to cross the Mediterranean sea by small boats which are usually overloaded and unsafe) he recently introduced anti-immigration policies, meaning that boats are forced to stop in the middle of the sea and wait for other European countries approval to land. It usually takes days for it to happen, each boat contains hundreds of people who often end up drowning. Also, Salvini made rescue boats illegal. People are getting more and more racist and violent because of him, black and brown people get beaten and insulted every single day. Needless to say, he's a Trump supporter.

Was in my grandparents’ living room last night when I heard an ad on Fox News stating that the left is trying to sabotage Trump’s excellent track-record through slanderous fake news. It was almost laughable to hear this ad, which was produced in an infomercial voice, asking for immediate donations to the Trump-Pence campaign.

As a person who grew up in a violent, gang filled, environment. I lost friends to gun violence and poverty. I’d take “violent” language any day over physical violence. Words can offend and emotionally hurt ppl, but the notion that words, in and of themselves are violence, well... I don’t agree.

Words are NOT violence. Words are words. Immigration is NOT invasion. Immigration is immigration. This is a perfect example of both sides getting it perfectly wrong an exacerbating the cultural divide rather than solving problems. Precise language is less provocative but it solves problems.

Morrison’s arrogance is so hard to take. I’m glad she identified the “violence of language” as a problem. I think we got the message somewhere between 1924-1945 that the VOL might be important.
