Cattle and horses arrived in America for the first time in 1521 during Ponce de Leon's exploration of Florida's gulf coast. Calusa Indians mortally wounded Ponce de Leon who's crew fled to Cuba, but their livestock remained. Today, the Seminole Tribe is one of the leading producers of cattle in America. I am thankful for Seminole friends who are living out connections to the land over millennia and have shared some of their world with me.
