🙌🏽 He’s sleeping 4.5 hour stretches at night now🙌🏽 I can’t explain how sleep deprived and depressed I was. Every night I’d be feeding him every 1.5-2 hours during the night and during the day he’d be sleeping 4 hour stretches. Then everyone kept telling me to see a lactation consultant, so I did and she totally changed everything!
So we found out that Oliver is only taking in 28-36 mls in total each breastfeeding session when he should be eating 60mls for his weight. After 5 mins he would fall asleep and do these butterfly sucks which apparently are not nutritious for Bub — I thought they were so left him on the breast for like 40 mins per breast. If I pump, my breasts produce 60 - 80 mls per session. This is why he’s always CRYING and wanting to feed every 1.5 - 2 hours — cause he was still HUNGRY. I had no idea he wasn’t getting enough food 😭. The tips from my lactation consultant:
1. Nurse on demand at best — 8 times in 24 hours
2. Wake him up every 3 hours during the DAY to feed him (I was letting him sleep through till when he wanted to wake up). By waking him up and feeding him, I am filing him with calories so he sleeps longer at night.
3. Once he falls asleep at my breast and does those butterfly sucks (which are not nutritious for him), I am to do breast compressions on my breasts (massaging lumpy bits and pausing while he gulps down milk) so this forces the milk into his mouth. I’m to do this till I empty my breast. This way I know I’m giving him a good 60mls. I am then to swap sides and do exactly the same thing.
4. Once he pulls away and becomes milk drunk, I then pump my breasts for 5 mins each side so I am not only totally emptying them, but also triggering my breasts to produce more milk for him every time.
5. As I’ve been so sleep deprived, I am to do no more than a 5 hour stretch of sleep myself at night as I still need to empty my milk during the night, which also prevents mastitis — this is when my husband takes over to feed him using my bottled breast milk in the other room.
6. Oliver is to do no more than a 4 hour stretch of sleep per night
7. She taught me the proper way for him to latch on to take in more milk.

I was feeding every 1-2hrs as well as trying to pump in between feeds... Unfortunately I live in a remote town and had no help other than breastfeeding hotline in which I used to call crying... I was so sleep deprived and even during the day he would only sleep 2hrs max... after 2 months of completely doing the unknown and letting nature do its thing he started drinking more at once which kept him fuller for longer...... you're so lucky you got to it quick and have the help 🙌

Be careful of too much pumping. That in itself can create mastitis. Your sons feeding habits are what trigger your breast to produce the sufficient amount of milk he needs. Pumping is good right now since you are still establishing your milk supply over the next month +. But just be careful to not to be over zealous with the pump. It hasn’t happened to me, but I know many a mama who self created mastitis by pumping when she didn’t need to :)

Actually, you don’t have to wake him up. Babies eat perfectly well while in sleeping state. (I know that sleeping baby shouldn’t be woken. That’s how they grow up.)
Also be aware that by completely emptying your breasts, you might provoke hyper-lactation, which might also be very uncomfortable. You have couple to several months until your breast supply coordinates according to the baby’s needs. :) Every beginning is hard.

This is all such great advise! After the birth of all 3 of my babies each one had different difficulties feeding and while I think the midwives do a great job at teaching to breastfeed o think it should be mandatory for new mum's to see a lactation consultant before leaving the hospital, it could save a lot of worry, tears and self doubt in new mums.

I would feed one side, and when baby started to fall asleep, I would stroke her cheek or tickle her feet or something. When finished that side would then change nappy (help to also wake bubs up) then finish off on other side. Worked for me. 40 weeks today, so Will put my $ where my mouth is very soon again. You are doing awesome mama 💕💕👌

Remember pumps are an invention, not nature. Women breastfed just fine before pumps came along :) some need it for sure and they are amazing. I pump here and there so there’s a supply on hand when I’m not around, but that being said, I rarely pump unless I missed a feed, or need to replenish my freezer supply.
