“Dropping” is when groups of children, generally pre-teens, are deposited in a forest and expected to find their way back to base. It’s meant to be a challenging exercise, and the teams often stagger in at 2 or 3 in the morning. If this sounds a little crazy, it’s because you aren’t Dutch. The Dutch teach children not to depend too much on adults; adults are taught to allow children to solve their own problems. Droppings distill these principles into extreme form, banking on the idea that even for children who are tired, hungry and disoriented, there is a thrill to being in charge. trog59_or_gma_or_gigi In this country for many, our children have become small idols at which their parents worship. For many, every month is celebrated with a special photo op. Birthdays are major productions. We have television shows glorifying families for simply producing more and more children, and trying to find new ways to create a catchy title. In the distant past, families had several children for the purpose of having more help to run the family farm in many cases. Now the Kardashians are trying to out do each other in producing babies. It’s great that Hollywood’s leading ladies no longer have to keep their children hidden so as not to spoil their image. But now we have gone to the other extreme.

isvvpouw I grew up in the Netherlands and had been “dropped” many times (usually during scouting camps). It was something we looked forward to because it was an opportunity to test our endurance and resourcefulness, and it was fun to roam around in the dark of night (we were always in groups of 5 to 10). Yes, I was surprised when I moved to the US to find out that no one has ever done this (unless you are in combat training) and no one knew what I was talking about ...

gingi_azaal @burgers.alex it happens at schoolcamps. But you know, we are such a small and very populated country that you can’t really get lost. So it’s not a big deal really. I had an experience at schoolcamp but i was more scared of the teachers making noises in the dark. We ended up in some village and got directions to the campsite and walked back. No trauma or bad memories for me :)

brock.putnam In my college, this was called a "pledge hike" ...the upperclassmen in the fraternity "kidnapped" the New members and dropped them off somewhere far from school to make their own way back...this isn't new...the ancient Spartans did something similar in raising their boys.

katg809 Was part of an Eagle Scout challenge back in the 70’s also. @michaeljames987 father was blind folded and towed across the lake at camp and then had to survive a night alone in the woods, and find his way back next morning. At least that what he said 🤣
