When were you told to “go back”? Last week, President Trump attacked 4 Democratic congresswomen, telling them to “go back” to where they came from. We asked readers here on Instagram and on Facebook, Twitter and nytimes.com if they've ever been told to “go back.” Some 16,000 responses flooded in. Readers recounted the insults they’ve heard, and many recalled first becoming aware of their “otherness” as young children and said that slurs had followed them into adulthood. Their stories span decades, with notable upticks after 9/11 and Trump’s election. And several readers expressed regret after telling others to “go back.” Read more responses at the link in our bio, and share your story in the comments.

i am French born and married an American GI in the 60’s
i was a legal citizen when we came home so i was never an immigrant.
A few weeks ago i was walking my very elderly dog and myself recovering from a fractured pelvis after a fall, when a dog off the leash came running at us and jumped on me and my dog . I asked her to call her dog back and she said “ no” and i reminded her of the leash law and she said “ i dont care”
then she picked up on my accent and decided to insult me and since then has gone out of her way to make my life on the trail miserable.
she has been stalking me and threatening me with calling ice , she walks by my home and films my front yard and car.. She is obviously a nut case , an old nut case my age and may be older.
I am an American citizen, my husband born in New Jersey served our country proudly for 25 yrs and is a Vietnam vet.
i worked as a nurse for 40 yrs and no regrets.

The person in charge of this country needs to be held accountable for his words. HIS words. We’re not talking past presidents or other officials which so many love to blurt out about when having this conversation.
I was married to an abusive man like many before me and we can all tell you along with any mental health professional; that words carry more weight than fists. Their aim is always dead center and sharp. The wound it leaves starts out small then widens along with its memory. The things I remember most if you ask me on the fly are not the broken noses or dislocated arm or the bruises; its the words and humiliation that go with them. People also need to remember that words are personal and may mean nothing to you. It does to someone and can evoke hate and mistrust amongst many as is happening every single day with this person. We need to fight against this type of ignorance. 💪

What is so bad of going back where you came from? Please want to understand what do you mean? Don't inflate things to manipulate public opinion because maybe that is why you need to go back home and rethink and take a break. I am american gang up against by blacks and foreign people I have helped, okay! and told go back to your place we don't here, we don't need you anymore, go let's be. I am going back home because realized my long years doing good for foreign and minorities are a waste of time, lessons have been learned and I can use that experience home where I belong and no one will knock to ask me for paperwork or some crazy assumption. I am going back, greater things than this are waiting for me. This is how I see the going back thing. Check your perception so we don't escalate things that can blow in our face, let's be adults for a day is too much to ask?

Yesterday! As an American, I was told to be ashamed of my country and go back to where I come from in Central London by an angry British woman. She said these comments the moment she heard that I speak with an American. It was sad and very difficult to hear those words, especially because I’m fully against the values the current Trump administration represents. And yet, I love my country and I’m still not ashamed of it and I’m proud of all US citizens who stand for equality, unity, humanity, and a democratic society free from racism and corruption: basically everything the Trump administration has attacked in the last 2-3 years.!?

Mine happened overseas, but was still annoying nonetheless. I am a Colombian adoptee raised in the USA. While living in Dublin, Ireland back in 2016 I was sitting at a bar with friends. An old, drunk man wandered in and told me to “go back to the Mexican border” because “there’s a warrant for your arrest.” My friends were horrified at the comment, and the bartender kicked him out, but I chose to brush it off because he was older and physically stronger than us. The exchange reminded me that this man’s point of view exists everywhere, but it made me thankful for my friends and the bartender who did not excuse his behavior ❤️

On the other side, I as a tourist suffered from inverse discrimination by an african-american old lady in a store at Harlem, NYC, when trying to buy some food. She was very angry cause I am white and she considered I was invading her space, though as a foreigner I was not aware of discrimination. I was helped by another young african-american employee who told the lady that was she was doing was very bad. I was not ofended but surprised and shocked, I don't understand any kind of discrimination and fortunately never saw or suffered something like that.
