Hong Kong has become increasingly polarized, as protesters say Beijing is eroding the autonomy it maintains under the “one country, two systems” model. Beijing-appointed leader Carrie Lam has declared the extradition bill “dead” but has not officially withdrawn it. On July 21, #protesters clashed with police, who fired tear gas and rubber bullets. That night, police were nowhere to be seen when men armed with wooden sticks stormed a train station near the Chinese border and terrorized commuters. Believed to be members of #HongKong’s “triad” gangs, they indiscriminately attacked pro-democracy protesters, journalists and bystanders in the most brutal protest-related incident to date. If violence becomes more common, Beijing may be more likely to step in to quell the protests, which have turned into a revolt against its hold over the region. andrewlam_yc @alex.zuo.98 I think at this point, it’s a waste of time to have a discussion with him. It’s a shame that he doesn’t even consider himself Chinese even though almost all HK’ers ancestors are from mainland. And unfortunately, there are many youths out there who think the same way. HK is part of China and that’s an indisputable fact. Even though the elderly man did knock down one of the protestor’s poster, there was no need to chase him down and then claim that he was hitting people. What happened to respect for elders even? @mentalmentos I know I am going to fall to deaf ears but if you want change, work for it. Rather than protesting and rioting on the street everyday, work hard and bring change within the system rather than trying to bring it down. HK was built because on the hard work of our parents and our grandparents, not because they protested and rioted for change. And let me tell you, the West is not as idealistic as most HK’ers think. Racism unfortunately is still a thing and I doubt the West is trying to help HK, but rather, they want to use HK and see how they can benefit them. But again, you are entitled to your own opinion and just because someone has different views than you doesn’t mean you denigrate them or default label them as communist/mainland Chinese.

andrewlam_yc @mentalmentos yeah but all three justify breaking rules and laws. Xinhai Revolution - people overthrew the government because the Qing dynasty was weak. China was being humiliated with Unequal Treaties and refused to modernize. If nothing was being done, people’s lives would have continued to be ruined. Gandhi - anti-imperialism/decolonization movement from Western aggressors (ironically, the British) Mao and PRC - peasants rise up because the Nationalists were corrupt and their livelihoods remained poor despite the Qing Dynasty being gone. I think the peasants were lied to by Mao but they just wanted to survive and the communists offered a different vision. But right now, you have all the resources and opportunities you need to improve your lives but it’s only up to you to utilize it. The events occurred because there was a sense of urgency. Besides, isn’t the whole point of the protests supposed to be for the withdrawal of the bill? Now it’s about a whole different topic and riots. But thanks, modern education has been great for me and I am using every opportunity I got from it. Maybe you should use some too.

qqisthebestgirl hk economy is already under pressure especially after the social unrest n upheaval, it’ll be worse. N China will only be better n better. Wot happened in hk today will never ever effect chinese ppl n it won’t even happen in China. I just feel sry 4 u guys. Being independent is a fond dream, remaking hks economy need chinas help. Let the insurrection keeps going n only hk will get hurt. Even tho u think I live in a country without any so called “democracy”, such a country like dis live a happy life. N look at hk, is dat the democracy u want? Wot can u get? Does dat make hk better? Does dat means hk is rule of law n China isn’t? Why China is so safe but not hk

mentalmentos @andrewlam_yc seems like you don't understand why people want government to withdraw the bill to begin with... The topic hasn't changed, the aim is still the same. Do you even know what the 5 demands are? You pretend to know the whole background of the events and claims we have the resources and opportunities to "do something more meaningful instead". You think we haven't tried all possible ways?Education is never enough, perhaps you should step your game up and get off your high horse. Stop pretending you know everything and anything.

tonyyqiu Imagine if any protest ever go violent in western countries, that Hong Kong wants to become of so badly, things would have been gone so differently. People out here judging the use of tear gas and rubber bullet choosing to ignore the fact protesters broke in the high court and destroyed everything and not acknowledging that police would use 10x more powerful way to wipe this out if this was to happened in the states. Funny
