The cause of the blaze at #NotreDame in #Paris is still unknown. Yet, writes Vivienne Walt in this week's International cover story, what it exposed is clear—the fragility of our most cherished buildings and the wistful attachment we hold to the spaces within their walls. The cathedral’s spire snapped off like a twig just before the sun set on April 15, crashing 314 ft. into the nave, through the ceiling that carpenters painstakingly carved by hand in the Middle Ages, using 5,000 oak trees. Within #France itself, the fire laid bare another, more complicated fragility: a tension rippling through the country, pitting the urge to preserve the past, and traditions of an exceedingly proud nation, against the need to overhaul its hidebound ways and modernize its system. All those people complaining about the amount of money donated to rebuild Notre Dame 🙄 Get over yourselves! The European Union invested 74,4 Billion Euros in worldwide development aid in 2018. Against this background, the statement that no money would be spent on people is absolutely ridiculous. In addition, people are free to decide what they want to donate their money for. Notre Dame is not just any building, but a cultural heritage that connects generations. People have been visiting the cathedral for 674 years and associate it with their own memories. Anyone who walks through the cathedral today sees the same windows that someone else had admired centuries before. Such cultural monuments are invaluable because they represent the evolution of societies, building techniques and architecture. Anyone who writes here that it is only a building has no historical consciousness whatsoever.

I am from paris France and I think it is disgusting the amount of many given by billionaires to renovate ND. So many people are in need of serious help all over the world and as much as I love this prestigious monument .... I say: Jesus loves people not stones. It's time to do what's right and be of service to others in desperate needs. So what ND needs TLC... look around you, your neighborhood, your town, strangers on the streets , people with no food for their kids . ND has been here for many years ... it will still be standing in hundreds of years . What about people ?

A relict of a time now the majority cries for Notre Dame but not for Mother and Father Earth? Plant 5,OOO oak tree in nature... and where are all these sponsors cried for and didn‘t spend any money? Is crying a kind of public relations?

It may have been better to be focused on Arctic Wildfire in Alaska, Canada and Siberia. The environment can be as important as the history. The media doesn’t play its real role in the awareness of the people.

@mish.mash.94 I do care about all this issues myself but it doesn’t mean that everything else must be neglected.
And Notre Dame is not « a structure », it is a masterpiece and a significant symbol.
