“Brokeback Mountain” was the first story Annie Proulx published in The New Yorker, in 1997. The tragic love affair between two cowboys offers a different take on the traditional tales of the West, contrasting the characters’ taut solitude with the wide-open landscapes that anchor their lives. And believe it or not, this short story is only mediocre when considering the entire oeuvre of Annie Proulx. What a stunning talent she has for writing about place and the often twisted characters and relationships among them. Add to that her smart dark humor and we have the greatest American author of our time.

And that film broke me! Went to see it w a handful of friends and was hugely embarrassed when the end left me in floods of unwanted, unexpected tears. Somehow I hadn’t read the short story—which I will now approach with trepidation.

Saw the movie, dud not read the story. A beautiful, tragic story. My only complaint is that they were not cowboys. They were sheep herders. Cowboys do not herd sheep.
