What can a professional Santa Claus do to stay sharp during the off-season? Take a cruise, of course. “I had read some stories of people — like real estate agents or doctors — having training conferences on ships, and I said, ‘Why not Santa?’” said Tim Connaghan, a 50-year veteran of the beard and red suit who came up with the Santa Cruise. These aren’t your average mall Santas: The people on this cruise live in the image of Father Christmas 365 days a year, and the annual event is a chance for them to gather and schmooze with their Mrs. Clauses and other like-minded members of this small community. They are also there to hone their skills: Lectures and workshops cover topics like beard-bleaching, techniques for cradling a baby and how to stay true to the teachings of the historic St. Nicholas.
