It is not hundreds of years, but rather, thousands of years…  A kimono is what my mother, grandmother and great grandmother wore to wed... it is something I'll continue the legacy for and wear, too.  A long standing legacy of strong women, who have survived wars, famine, atomic bombs and internment camps, the kimono remains to be some of the last prized, historically of our Japanese family traditions.  In Japanese-American culture, dating back to 1942, they are a solid representation of who the Japanese are, when stripped of their belongings in back in the US//Japanese internment camps -- they were only allowed to take what they could carry. Many of them chose to pack their beloved kimonos.  When recently interviewing the last atomic bomb survivors for a Japanese network documentary, I learned that some of the instantly orphaned children who survived their entire families used their mother’s kimonos to wrap their bare, severely burned heads, to protect and heal… it was all they had left.  Custom made fabrics, touches of gold, cherished at weddings and funerals, graduations and ceremonies.  Family lines of lineage stand within the lines of the kimono…  the prize, the significance of the kimono in our families, like treasures of gold  We learn from our culture who we are... the most sacred place to continue to preserve is where we all come from.
