Photo by @Cristina Mittermeier | We celebrate World Environment Day every year to raise awareness of environmental issues as they emerge and unfold around us. In Greenland, a declining sled dog population is another, perhaps surprising, example of the impact of climate change in the Arctic. The sled dog has played an invaluable role in the survival of the Inuit peoples who live in the Arctic since well before the dawn of the written word. Sled dogs changed the way that humans moved across the snow and the ice, and the way that they hunted. As sea-ice melts in the North, it becomes harder to hunt, harder to find food for both dogs and humans. I traveled through frigid temperatures with these men and their dogs to try and capture the relationship between them. For sled dogs, the mentality of the pack is strong. They are bold and independent dogs who do not listen to just anyone. They need a powerful leader - someone who feels at much at home in this word of ice and snow as they do. Follow me @Cristina Mittermeier for more photos that call attention to the climate crisis. #WorldEnvironmentDay #FortheLoveofDogs #awareness #snow #arctic
