I had taken my son, @richardstanmeyer, with me on this @natgeo assignment to the island of Flores, something I try to do with my children so they can better understand this incredibly fragile and fantastic world we live on. That night, we slept outside on the porch in Bena village at a family’s home. I woke up before Richard, just before dawn, hearing footsteps. Through the haze, we were greeted by this beautiful surreal welcoming from those who wondered why we chose to sleep outside in the cold, not inside the home. I explained, rather deliriously, I had been wanting to photograph Mount Inerie throughout the night, a volcano right at the base of their village, hoping to see how the moonlight changed across their most amazing and mystical mountain. Unfortunately, the fog had arrived earlier that evening, and we fell asleep under thick blankets and had slept mighty fine. Smiling at our silliness, they later made us amazing coffee and biscuits.
