I stand with @jeffsotoart and @maxxer242 because I believe they have the right to be fairly compensated if their work is used in a corporate ad campaign. I stand against the bullying tactics that a powerful corporation like Mercedes Benz is using to intimidate Jeff and Max. Visit the link in bio for more info from The @detroitnews. Thanks for caring. - Shepard

So now that you have shared this photo which is driving people to your page that you make money off of and you're against Mercedes in this case i'm hoping you got a release from the artist and paid them right? Along with Mercedes, the designer of that car, the people who built it, the builders and designers of all the other cars in the background, the photographer of the image, the designer of those lamp posts, the people who painted or printed everything else in the photo, the designer of those flags on the lamp posts, the person driving the car, the person who designed all those other buildings, the artist who made that central market sign, I'm sure if I zoom in there is a sticker or a tag somewhere I can find, what about all those people?.... see how crazy that all is? This is why once you put something in a public area like this you let go of most of your rights to it. I'm positive there is a photo somewhere on this page that did exactly what MB did here. MB is not claiming its their work and they had all the permits and waivers they needed by law. I'm sure the artists know this and just making a big deal about it to get even more attention, but now it's going to cost them some lawyer fees.

For all of you geniuses making comparisons to architectural structures, try familiarizing yourself with the Architectural Works Protection Act which provides quite clearly that structures subject to the act at all (i.e., constructed after 1990) which are viewable from public spaces cannot restrain the use of their image. By contrast, reproductions of artistic images such as these murals are firmly established as protected from reproduction, public display and commercial use. Your point isn't based in law. You could make the point from the perspective of fairness, but that shouldn't be detrimental to the artists but more protective of architects. Of course there's pretty obvious public policy reasons for things being the exact way that they are.

I work in TV and any art our cameras capture on the street while filming outdoor scenes has to get cleared. This goes for Ads, street art, company logos and even a paintings in a gallery window some characters walked past. Networks have entire departments that just specialize in tracking down the artists and getting their work cleared. If they can’t contact them or come to an agreement, the VFX team replaces it with something that is cleared.

I wonder what the feeling would have been if it were the other way round. VW and Mercedes emblems are commonly sprayed on murals. Do the car manufacturers sue for copyright there too? Sorry @obeygiant I am with Mercedes on this one.. the murals were painted in public spaces. Live with the fact that people are going to have parts of them in their photos..

@obeygiant what about the road the drove on ? Don't the guys that built it deserve to be paid as well for their work ? If you don't want your work to be seen then stay home and paint your bathroom walls...
