I created this image of Cesar Chavez in collaboration with Jim Marshall's estate for my project, "American Civics" in 2016. Workers’ rights continues to be a theme that I care about and one of the main focuses of this series. Although Cesar Chavez Day was yesterday, I think about Chavez daily because my studio is on the part of Sunset that turns into Cesar Chavez Boulevard in Echo Park. I believe in what he stood for as an activist and civil rights leader. He fought for the rights of people doing some of the most difficult work for some of the lowest wages, to unionize and advocate for themselves to earn a dignified wage. As we continue to live and work in today's society, it’s important to remember everything Chavez fought for. I'm looking forward to attending the Cesar Chavez Foundation Gala this Thursday in Los Angeles. Some of the large format prints of "Workers’ Rights” from the American Civics series are still available and will be back on obeygiant.com soon, with a portion of proceeds going to the United Farm Workers of America. Stay tuned! – Shepard

@obeygiant — have you considered adding Dolores Huerta to the series? She was the amazing woman who fought with Cesar Chave. She knew that as a woman she couldn’t be the face of the movement at the time, so she called on her brother in law, Cesar Chavez, to join her. They were an amazing duo!!! Dolores lives just north of LA still fighting for workers rights in Kern County. You would never regret meeting this charming, inspiring power house that she is. @doloreshuerta @doloreshuertafdn

I also love this mural you created in Hayes Valley, here in in San Francisco, CA ... really beautiful. I was just admiring it this weekend with a friend while enjoying a smitten ice cream 🙌✨I don’t take for granted the hard work and labor rights he created and established for generations to follow. 💪🏽🙏🏽

Eternally grateful for this @obeygiant , Cesar was an inspiration and the cataclysm needed at the time. As someone who grew up in Boyle Heights I often wondered who our next leader will be. Just as I often wonder when our people will finally rise 😘👌🏼

Would have preferred this to the Johnny cash mural you put in Sacramento. We have a Cesar Chavez park just a couple blocks away from your mural 😒 Johnny cash wasn’t even that great of a person and he didn’t unionize any prisoners 😒

Yes! This k you for your diverse representation of people. This one hits close to home for me. My grandfather and and dad worked in the fields and were part of la Huelga during that time.
