This is not to say that there aren’t some nice images tucked away but my life has been so chaotic and busy for the last few years that the only images that I ever seem to get around to processing at the moment are either ones for a photo story that I might be working on or images that I’m looking to enter into competitions. As the Yellowstone images are neither they, like thousands of images on my hard drives are waiting for the day when I finally return to being a full time photographer, and when I hopefully get a chance to start working through my image backlog. This image, like many backlit images, has a great deal of exposure latitude in relation to how it could have been photographed. My main goal with the image was to retain the fantastic colours in the sky, the golden light around the bison itself and to ensure that the background was dark enough to reveal the bison’s breath in the freezing evening air. I also wanted to avoid the image looking washed out but equally I didn’t want it to look too dark, too moody or too unreal. In these circumstances, where there is extremely limited time due to the sun setting the bison can be quite frustrating to work with. Understandably, given the extreme climate in which they live, and the herbivorous nature of their diet, they need to spend most of their time feeding and so it’s often a waiting game, hoping and willing for the bison to lift its head, just for a moment. As is always the case the photographer can be in the right place, at the right time, with all of the knowledge and experience to have the camera exposure and lens settings correct but if our old friend ‘luck’ deserts us then we’ll have nothing.
