It took years to get access to that very protected region of Xinjiang (Eastern Turkestan). I had the chance to meet Tadjik, Uyghurs, and Kazaks. The Altai Mountains is the birthplace of the Turkic tribes which, over the course of millennia, spread out towards the west. The last two centuries saw the two neighbouring great powers divide the vast steppes of Central Asia among them. Russia, over the course of its conquest of the southeast region, invaded Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan. China advanced to the west, annexing Eastern Turkestan, the land of the Uyghurs, along with other tribes. They named the region Xinjiang, which means “new frontiers. The Kazakhs, who live in the Altai mountains, pursue their transhumance, braving the will of the central government to make these nomads sedentary. On the heights of Mount Altai, every single day a Kazakh woman brings a bucket of milk to the yurt where she lived with her family.
