It’s bewildering when life shakes the ground and the steady rhythm once enjoyed for years seems to have slipped beneath the cracks. The past year unhinged me in this way. With extremes from one spectrum to the other and a hearty mix in between. I wasn’t use to that. Not for a long enough while at least. Life had been gentle and steady and comfortable. And I had had enough adventures for a lifetime under my belt already, so comfortable didn’t bother me. But death and loss arrived. Unexpectedly. My dad. My Dynamite Awesome Dad. It’ll be a year since he walked on in a few weeks. Thoughts, memories, heartache, gratitude, flux, the missing, the love, the spaces in between. Yeah, there is no segue from this thought to the next. So, moving on, a dream transpired. Literally and metaphorically speaking. Fate, mystery and a miracle. I married my love. We met long ago, there was a dream, we made a promise, we kept that promise. I’ll never forget that one day at the airport. A favorite moment that I’ll never be able to replay enough. Then a trek, a move and a new land. Beautiful, wild, foreign, exciting and also “who am I here?” But the calm of winter, that season so typically shunned, what a welcome relief of stillness needed for my soul. Cleansing, quiet, restful. Now the earth awakens again in spring and new life, growth, wings, and a new rhythm. And sometimes anxiety too: “When will the earth shake again? Please not anytime soon. Or ever.” The answer? I don’t know. But I do know this: my husband will extend his hand to me often, in the start of a day, and say, “Take my hand, let me love you, come let’s enjoy our life today.” I think that’s a glimpse of the Divine honestly.
