The Arafura file snake is found in both Australia and Papau New Guinea. This species is drawn to bodies of water with muddy bottoms like rivers, lakes, and swamps. Aboriginal people in both countries have been known to selectively hunt these snakes, but never in quantities that threaten its population. In Australia these snakes are an important food item, while in Papua New Guinea the skins are used on village drums. This species is not currently under threat and local sourcing is unlikely to cause harm so long as the snake skins are not used for commercial export. Photo taken in Lilydale, Victoria, Australia.
