When glaciers melt away, #Switzerland sees opportunity. They’ve created hydropower dams, like the one seen here, and generating plants that feed off rain, snow and meltwater. In all, #hydropower plants supply 60% of Switzerland’s electricity. Now, as the #Alps warm faster than the global average, the glaciers are melting fast, leading to greater electricity generation. But eventually the ice will retreat so much that stream flows will decline and power production will drop. In turn, the Swiss may increase wind, solar and geothermal power, but they're also counting on hydropower companies to expand production. When glaciers retreat, the valleys they have created are exposed. Some of them may be ideal sites to collect and store water for hydropower. @henryfountain, an #nytimes climate reporter, and @bcsolomon, a Times multimedia reporter, traveled to the Alps to see how glacial melting is affecting hydropower.
