Female #surfers have had to endure comments like: “Get the hell out of here,” and, “One thing I can’t stand is girls riding (or attempting to ride) big waves.” The perceived gender balance of big wave #surfing was clear — big waves were for the men. But now, women are taking their place in the waves and in big wave competitions, fighting for gender equality and equal pay for all professional surfers — and they have been more successful than they ever imagined, notes @nytmag writer Daniel Duane. @seasachi captured this video of @paigealms surfing Maverick’s, one of the world’s 2 most important big-wave breaks, in Northern #California.
