Fall and winter are a great time of year to visit Capitol Reef and avoid the scorching heat of summer. Capitol Reef was established as a national park in 1964 but State Highway 24 is the only paved road through the park. Much of the rest of the park is accessible by dirt road with a four wheel drive vehicle.
