If current trends continue, China’s population will peak at 1.44 billion in 2029 before entering “unstoppable” decline, according to a recent study. By 2050, 330 million Chinese will be over the age of 65. China, whose extraordinary economic heft has been built on labor-intensive manufacturing, is uniquely ill-prepared for the societal changes that this gray wave will bring. Fewer people means less domestic consumption, and thus rapidly slowing economic growth. The scale of the aging problem in China is partly due to the legacy of the one-child policy. Although the Chinese government now discourages women from delaying marriage for their careers, many women continue to prioritize their professional life over starting a family.
