Yanze Bulama, 35, was hemorrhaging badly after she delivered a stillborn baby at home at 37 weeks pregnant. The Nigerian Borno state—which is at the epicenter of a decade–long Islamist insurgency led by Boko Haram—is one of the worst places in the world to give birth. More than 6,500 newborns die every year of preventable causes—twice the rate of the rest of the country, and between 3,500 and 4,500 women die every year due to childbirth-related causes. Nigeria, with UNICEF’s help, has deployed midwives to work in the health clinics of Borno state’s internally displaced camps. But around 80% of women in the Borno state of Nigeria still deliver at home. Many depend on the help of traditional birth attendants who, though well-meaning, can make complications in delivery worse.
