This month is Black History Month, but racial issues exist all year long. I really believe in what MLK said when he said that ‘Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.’ I have long realized the imbalance in our society and I fight to try to correct those injustices. For the Damaged exhibition, I was exploring many different themes of social justice and other threats to our civilization that I want to continue to bring awareness to. For that body of work, I created this Bias by Numbers piece in 2017 to address racial bias in policing, criminal justice, and media culture. Racial bias in policing and criminal justice has a long history, but studies have revealed evidence of just how pervasive and consistent the bias against black citizens really is. Blacks face a severe degree of police bias in relation to whites. Convictions for drug possession are almost six times higher for blacks. Blacks frequently receive longer prison sentences than whites contributing to African Americans being incarcerated at more than 5 times the rate of whites. Additionally, racial bias in police enforcement undermines public trust and presents a significant threat to legitimacy of law enforcement in all communities.
