The secretary of state (Michigan) Jocelyn Benson spoke at our #WSF luncheon in D.C. and told a story about one of her greatest athletic accomplishments being when she ran a marathon while 8 months pregnant. .
It wasn’t the fact that she did it that was the point, but that she didn’t think she could do it (and wouldn’t have) until she saw another woman who had her exact due date running a marathon at 8 months pregnant.

When she saw the other woman finish her marathon, she knew she could do it. So she did. And then she ran for office...nbd.

Her story immediately made me think of my first female mentor post injury @pattycisnerosprevo .
I really didn’t know, even years after breaking my back when I met her, if I could even be happy living in a wheelchair. I didn’t know I could be a student athlete or play USA wheelchair basketball or be a parent BUT I saw Patty do it (with all her Patty stoke/enthusiasm) and I KNEW I COULD. Seeing her left no doubt in my mind. Shes been one of the greatest role models of my life and I’m so grateful for her courage and strength and how it’s impacted me!
