A year ago today my ski racing career ended. . . After crashing in a downhill training run to qualify for the @pyeongchang2018 Paralympic Games I got my 7th major concussion (I think, kinda lost track) and a face full of snow rash. . I was absolutely devastated to say the least. I was disappointed in myself for how it all went down, the choices I had made leading up to the crash and everything I had done to prepare. . The only thing I didn’t regret about that day was when I decided to put my brain health first and opted not to try to race again to qualify. It was more of an important decision than I even knew at the time. Sure I was making the right choice in the moment given the probability of a TBI but also, I was choosing not to sacrifice my body for the sport I loved any longer. That was what finally closed the chapter for me and opened the next one: self love and preservation. . I’m grateful for the people that encouraged me to make the right decision that day including my personal alpine ski coach (and father figure) Erik Petersen at the @thenscd and two of my best friends @stallingscrystal and @sydneyprather. Also, if I didn’t have @pattycisnerosprevo and Tony to come home to and sulk with in the impending depression, I don’t know what I would have done. Love you guys. . Athletes don’t all get to go out “on our own terms” but, a year later I’m thankful for this clarity and life teaching me again (the hard way) that maybe there are no bad experiences, just important life lessons. . #loveyourbrain #helmetsarecool #teamtoyota #nextchapter #gratitude #faceplant #alpineskiracing #damagedmoneymaker #lifelessons @toyotausa @teamtoyota
