In the last 2 weeks, thousands of people have left the last piece of land under Islamic State control in #Iraq and #Syria and surrendered to American-backed coalition forces in the Syrian desert. Hunger has forced many once-committed members of the caliphate to flee. Some of the suspected fighters were taken to prison after surrendering. The majority of recent arrivals to this spot outside the village of Baghuz are presumed to be wives and children of the ISIS militants. Women and children were told they would be bused to one of several detention camps in northern Syria. Others died before they could be taken away including a woman in her 20s who was buried after she died at the screening site. The peril that the Islamic State’s own families were subjected to was evident in the number of people who showed up hungry and wounded. @ivorprickett took this photo last week of women and children as they waited to be screened after surrendering.
