In 2018, @teresabaker11 introduced the @outdoorceopledge at the Summer Outdoor Retailer Market. This pledge invites CEOs of major companies to incorporate diversity and inclusiveness into their hiring process, marketing campaigns, and community engagement. Thanks to Teresa’s tireless work, 23 CEOs signed on ✅ Other organizations such as @melaninbasecamp @heyflashfoxy @browngirlsclimb @indigenouswomenhike @nativesoutdoors and many many more have been advocating the voices of BIPOC (Black Indigenous People of Color) for years.

A few days ago, @camberoutdoors (who’s CEO is white) announced their own diversity pledge, claiming it as “the first of its kind” and erasing the efforts of those who came before. This is a slap in the face for those who have worked hard to uplift and amplify the presence of POC and other marginalized groups. By refusing to collaborate with the existing CEO Diversity Pledge (Teresa reached out but was ignored), @camberoutdoors perpetuated colonialist practices that have silenced POC since the dawn of time. The company issued a hollow apology and responded to comments with the same cookie-cutter answer, but it dodged accountability and is not enough to address the impact of their actions.

I ask everyone to support grassroots BIPOC organizations and keep important dialogues flowing around DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) ??? and I thank you for taking the time to read this.
