The protest of the killing of Amadou Diallo in Feb 1999. 20 years ago today, Amadou Diallo, a 23-year-old immigrant from Guinea, was shot and killed by four New York City Police Department plain-clothed officers, after they mistook him for a rape suspect. The officers fired 41 shots, 19 of which struck Diallo, outside his apartment in the Soundview section of The Bronx, despite he was unarmed. Diallo’s death and the way of killing, 41 bullets onto him, created enormous outrage in New York and beyond, especially as police brutality became so rampant in the city, or the Giuliani administration. All four officers were charged with second-degree murder and acquitted at trial. The reason of the acquittal could be that the trial happened in Albany in New York, not New York City. The image is the homage to Amadou Diallo. But also it could mean much more. Such a situation still hasn’t changed so much. Police brutality with racism and socio-economic classism, (though Diallo comes from the rich family) still strongly exists across United States, especially in this era of Trump, even though most cops are good. #AmadouDiallo #41bullets #nyc
