Never too late to celebrate!!…”Happy, Happy Birthday Martin Luther King!” I’ll never, ever forget this moment right here…My beloved brother, Stevie Wonder, asked me to conduct a celebration concert at the Kennedy Center to commemorate the very first Martin Luther King Jr. Day, & that’s exactly what we did…With our glow sticks & voices held high, we celebrated the man, his message, & his legacy. Years before we got to that point, however, I went down to the funeral with Marlon Brando, Haskell Wexler, James Baldwin, Norman Jewison, Tony Franciosa, Hal Ashby, & Cesar Chavez. We all slept on a hotel floor down there & were unexplainably affected by the whole experience. In the following years, activism was priority…As I previously mentioned, I’d never been that political before, but following the mule-drawn wagon carrying Dr. King’s casket through the streets of Memphis in a crowd of thousands pushed me right to the edge. This “All-Star Celebration Honoring Martin Luther King Jr.” was a momentous occasion because it not only celebrated Dr. King, it celebrated the fact that Martin Luther King Jr. Day was approved into signing, & his memory would be cemented into the calendar for generations to come. It was an enormous feat, for all involved in the campaigning to get the holiday approved, & it remains of the most beautiful symbols of unity I’ve ever seen.
