Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Bengal tiger portrait – Another day and another re-processed version of an image that I’d previously, and very clumsily processed. The light at the time was not at its best, perhaps 10am on an Indian winters morning but given that the sun first emerges at maybe 7am that will give you some idea that the image was not exactly captured in those golden seconds of fleeting sunlight, just after dawn or before sunset. Nevertheless, the tiger was at least sitting in some heavy shade and so, by exposing to retain as much detail in the tiger as I possibly could, without blowing to the extremes the sunlit background my choice of exposure had to a certain degree to be more about compromise. I had to underexpose a little bit the tigers face in order to be able to retain detail in the surrounds but there was still some troublesome blown highlights on the tigers left cheek, as you look at it. I’ve tried to hold these blown highlights back as much as I reasonably can but in the absence of simply cloning in new hair, something that I wouldn’t be comfortable doing, it’s simply a case of hoping that the rest of the images’ qualities shine through. First among these must be that it is a tiger, a young but chunky necked adolescent, kind enough to offer me a beautifully symmetrical portrait as he stares straight down the barrel of my lucky lens. His eyes to me are mesmerising and again, when looking at the image I’m able to re-experience a moment that I was so, so privileged to have experienced in the first place. With that in mind there are few experiences on Earth that compare with seeing a truly wild tiger in the Kipling-esque forests of India. For those then upon whose bucket-list this experience sits please do email me at [email protected] for details of my soon-to-be-filled January 2020 tiger tour to the exquisite forests of India’s Bandhavgarh National Park. It will be an experience that you will cherish always.
