They shelter them on their feet to keep the chicks from freezing on the sea ice where they gather. But it’s the melting of that sea ice that may become of a bigger problem for their survival. As Antarctica’s ice edge fractures under the influence of global warming emperor penguins are going to become symbols of vulnerability just like polar bears are that already for the Arctic.
