Photo by @max.lowe // The Bison is without a doubt, a pilar of the American image. Once numbered around 18 million, the Buffalo were almost hunted to extinction during the western expansion of European settlers across the Great Plains of the US in the late 1800s. From 541 individuals in 1889, the population has since rebounded in specific parks, reservations and private lands back up to a sustainable number. I always took for granted growing up with these fluffy ungulates in my backyard here in Montana, but they truly embody part of what it means to be “way out west”.
