Great Wall and Sheep Pen, Xiaokou, Gansu
Here in the village of Xiaokou I found the villagers using the Great Wall as part of their sheep pen. I climbed on top to take this photograph at dawn as the shepherd opened a door cut in the wall below to let his sheep out to pasture. Marco Polo never mentioned the Great Wall leading doubters to contend he never made it to China. But if this is the wall he saw on his travels, why would he find this packed-mud barricade worthy of mention when compared to the great castle walls of Europe? Here even sheep herders disrespect it. #greatwallofchina #sheeppen #handynasty @thesilkroadjourney
