Let me explain; Arenal is one of the liveliest volcanoes on the planet, and for many years it could be counted on to erupt every few hours with a thunderclap, hurling smoke and roiling lava into the air. Impressive enough by day, it is vastly more dramatic at night, when it could fill the sky with glowing fire. I spent several weeks in Costa Rica trying to get a picture of an eruption, but persistent clouds and rain made photography impossible. Day after day, the mountain roared away while I looked up at the bottom of a leaden cloud bank. Maddening. Finally one night, it suddenly cleared, and I rushed into position, and waited..and waited…and waited some more. Long after dark, the mountain remained sullen and quiet, perversely uninterested in putting on a show. By early morning, I was exhausted and frankly tired of waiting. Then I had an idea. There was no moon, and the sky was an inky black. So I simply opened the camera shutter - and went to sleep. Then, in what seemed like brief moments after I had drifted off, I was shaken by a massive, deafening eruption. I jumped up and ran to the camera, but by then, the fireworks had already ended.
