T.M. Landry, a prep school in Louisiana, won acclaim for sending underprivileged black students to elite colleges. A video of a 16-year-old Landry student opening his Harvard acceptance letter last year has been viewed more than 8 million times. But there's more to the story. The Landrys fostered a culture of fear with physical and emotional abuse, students and teachers said. Students were forced to kneel on rice, rocks and hot pavement, and were choked, yelled at and berated. The school also doctored college applications.

Our reporters Erica Green and Katie Benner interviewed 46 sources including parents, current and former students, former teachers and law enforcement agents. They also examined incorrect transcripts, a college application, court documents showing that Michael Landry and another teacher at the school had pleaded guilty to crimes related to violence against students, and police records that included multiple witness statements saying that Michael hit children. @annieflanagan took these photos of former T.M. Landry students. Visit the link in our profile to see more.
