Hilma af Klint, a Swedish artist born in 1862, has emerged from a sea of all male artists as the true pioneer of abstract art. She began making giant, bold, colorful shapes in 1906 (the three you see here were done a year later), but feared the art world wouldn’t understand it and stipulated in her will nothing could be exhibited until 20 years after her death. That happened in 1944, a few days shy of her 82nd birthday, in a tram accident in Stockholm. The @グッゲンハイム美術館’s current show—today she’d be 156—finally asserts her spot at the forefront (not so fast, Kandinsky and Mondrian) of one of the most influential moments in art history, and couldn’t come at a more poignant time for female artists.
