Joe was a football star turned Nike master trainer. Definitely a stud, but someone I assumed was just a gym jock. Until! One day he left a book bag in the locker room and I did what anyone else would do: I went through it. I expected protein powder and MAXIM but… nope. There were a bunch of books, one on Far East religion, one on Greek philosophy. I realized Joe was a closet nerd! A top secret intellectual disguised in compression socks. Over the years, we became friends and his career soared. He became @GQ’s newest fitness columnist and a wellness commentator on the @todayshow. He did his own @masterclass, the first to lead a seminar on health and wellness. He got so busy with this other stuff he didn’t have time to work out with me. Which is fine, I’ll just never wear skinny jeans again. When we first met, his Instagram handle was OCHO system. His philosophy was: O. C. H. O. “One Can Help Others, Others Can Help One.” Joe’s OCHO outlook is what we’re honoring today. More than a decade ago, when I first started doing holiday deliveries, Joe came with me. (My mom and Aunt Tina always still ask about him.) He was the first to join groups at the warehouse on packing days. This time yesterday, he was meeting meal recipients around Grand Central Station. I like Joe for the obvious reasons: He’s handsome and posts pics without a shirt on. But I love the guy because he understands health starts with the soul. Personal connections, being of service. He’s the sort of guy who pushes you to your max potential, as an athlete, a thinker, a friend, a human. On one of our last workouts, we met at the gym to pump iron but I was especially frazzled. He told me to just lay down and take a nap. So, I did. His explanation? If you feel good, you’ll look good. Joe, you’ve made so many people look good and feel good, and it’s my honor to be the one to bring you up here today.”」11月17日 23時12分 - derekblasberg
