Bangladeshi photojournalist Shahidul Alam (@shahidul001) reacts as he is released from jail in Dhaka, Bangladesh, on Nov. 20, following a stint of more than 100 days behind bars in a closely watched press freedom case. The 63-year-old was dragged from his home by plainclothes officers in early August, following an interview and the posting of Facebook videos in which he criticized the government for violently responding to student protesters calling for safer roads, and charged with making “provocative" comments. When Alam appeared in court, a friend said at the time, he was unable to walk by himself and showed signs of being beaten up. Alam was charged under Section 57 of Bangladesh’s Information Communications Technology Act, which rights groups says is a “draconian” law used to stifle the media, political dissent and even mild criticism of the governing party.
