As a child, Samantha Bee (@fullfrontalsamb) was very shy. She was the quiet joker in school—the person who would write down funny #jokes and slip them to classmates. It wasn’t until her late 20s that she started a career in #comedy. Bee made her way to @thedailyshow, where she was the only female correspondent for many years. "It wasn’t like a weight that I carried on my shoulders or anything like that—I didn’t suffer because there was not another female correspondent. But it was very trial by fire,” Bee tells TIME. In 2016, she became the first woman to host a late-night satire show: ‘Full Frontal with Samantha Bee’. "You’re always inviting criticism, and I definitely get a lot of it,” Bee says. This summer, she grappled with fallout from something she said on the show—"the quote-unquote incivility of my language." She's "okay with occasionally getting called out for a bad word, as long as I’m on the right side of history.” So Bee keeps her focus on the work: "I always try to impart to my kids that you don’t have to decide what your path is exactly. You just have to love what it is you’re doing.” See more women who are changing the world at TIME.com/firsts. Photograph by @heyparkerday for TIME
