Happy Sunday;) On Sundays I donate my social channels to my @yearsofliving team to talk carbon pricing. Although our team was disappointed that the carbon fee initiative didn't pass, we are well positioned going into 2019 to pass carbon pricing in several states. So there's a lot to be excited about! Today’s post comes from Andrew Dickinson. “We as informed young people should know about what’s going on in our world, we should know the pressing issues that will affect us for the rest of our lives. As a communications major who cares about our planet and its future, I was driven to mull over the recent IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) report about Climate Change. Like you, I know the importance of facts and how they can help us cultivate informed opinions about major issues. This rings true when it comes to Climate Change, where there is a plethora of misinformation flying around, where it is all too easy to accept opinion as fact and fall into binary thinking, good or bad, black or white. We must think more critically than that to truly understanding an issue this complex. For instance, as I was reading this report here’s what stuck out to me, that we need to limit average global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) rather than 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit). Why does this matter? Why would half a degree make a difference? I know it may seem inconsequential but the report says that even that small of a difference could cost us nearly 100% of all coral reefs. This loss would wreak havoc on ocean ecosystems. That half a degree will behold far more frequent natural disasters; that once-in-a-century cataclysmic weather events will instead come once a decade, and perhaps even yearly. I know this may be a stressful and a bleak outlook on the future, but do not fret, because there is hope. The report calls for immediate action and we are here to help. Organizations like Our Climate are determined to educate and advocate for tangible actions that can be taken by everyday citizens, like you or I. Please help us mitigate climate change by voting for legislation like carbon pricing!”
