All high tides are not created equal. We know that the gravitational attraction of the sun and the moon, and the motion of the earth is the cause of tides. For any particular location, tide height and fluctuation in time depends to varying degrees on the location of the sun and the moon, and to the details of the shape of the beach, coastline, coastline depth, and prevailing ocean currents. But why are tidal fluctuations greater in certain areas compared to other locations? As the moon or sun twists and pulls on the oceans, a “tidal wave” is created and flows around specific points located throughout the earth as confined within the dominant landmasses. The further you travel away from these points, the greater the tidal fluctuation.
