So happy to get a safe descent down the Rio Kwanza - This river is incredible. Back story: The Kwanza is one of the major rivers in Africa but due to the 27year civil war it’s largely unexplored. We set out to run the Lauca Gorge - but a few factors kept us out. Luckily, we got permits to run the section Luaca - Ponte Kwanza ? Tons of read and run, and an insanely beautiful part of the planet - but also a river system struggling to survive extensive damming. We saw 2 new dam sites in addition to the 5 already there. These dams control the water level and keep it much lower than traditional seasonal flows wreaking havoc on the fish life. The croc population was crazy due to the perfect breeding conditions and no monsoon flows to wash them downstream. Scary moments but stoked to get through and after 3 days & reach the Ponte Kwanza in one piece. .
