You’ve been leaving a fingerprint trail since the moment you woke up. Your prints are on your toothbrush, your steering wheel, all over your laptop. Do you ever think about what information about yourself you’re leaving behind? With mass spectrometry, a technology that analyzes fingerprints in previously impossible detail, scientists can learn all about who you are and how you live — just from the tiny molecules on your print. Chemist Simona Francese uses this data to contribute to police investigations, and she’s currently building an identikit to help with criminal profiling. “Molecules are storytellers, so information on your health, your actions, your lifestyle, your routines, they're all there, accessible in a fingerprint,” she says. “And molecules are the storytellers of our secrets in just a touch.” To watch her #TEDTalk, visit go.ted.com/fingerprints
