Ever wonder how tide influences surf conditions, and whether or not there is a “best tide” for surfing? Well, tide is the periodic rise and fall of the waters (measured vertically) of the ocean and its inlets or big lakes. This phenomenon is produced by the attraction of the moon and sun. So how does this affect surfing? Well, every break has its favored tides, which is mainly due to the bathymetry of that specific break. Different spots are best when the tide is high or low. However, too high of a tide for most spots will swamp the surf out, and too low a tide may drain things out. So, the ideal tidal range for each spot is when the swell/ bathymetry relationship is at its max potential to produce quality surf.
