While on assignment for @ナショナルジオグラフィック on a story about Angor Wat and it’s control & eventual over control of water, I was able to take to the air and get a view of the temple that few get to see. The temple complex in #Cambodia and one of the largest religious monuments in the world is on a site measuring 402 acres.
It was originally constructed as a Hindu temple dedicated to the god Vishnu for the Khmer Empire, gradually transforming into a Buddhist temple towards the end of the 12th century. It was built by the King Suryavarman II.

The control of water and heavy rains which repeatedly flooded the complex and lead to the capital of the empire to be moved to Phnom Pen. Those rains and the age of seafaring exploration where the two main reason for the “abandonment” of #AngkorWat. @atedge @ナショナルジオグラフィック @thephotosociety
