Me with the bears – I would never normally post an image of me on Social media, in fact this is the first one that I’ve ever posted on Instagram so please forgive me this indulgence. Sometimes however us photographers are afforded such outrageous privileges, getting to spend time in the most remarkable places and with the most astonishing creatures that it would seem a shame to keep such experiences hidden away on our phones. The few that I have shown this image to have usually asked the same questions, either ‘are they stuffed’ or ‘was I scared’. Of course for those of my peers who have been fortunate enough to share similar experiences they’d know that nothing could be further from the truth. These bears, whilst formidable predators in their own right are, like so many other living creatures, so very and unfairly maligned. In truth they are curious, charismatic, funny, intelligent and astonishingly beautiful creatures to be around, to marvel at and to spend time with. Russia remains the most spectacular wildlife destination that I’ve ever visited, the people were warm and gracious, the scenery protected to a degree that brings absolute shame to the way that we treat our natural history here in the UK. This image was taken on the Kamchatka Peninsula in Far East Russia and out of sight to my left and right was up to 15 additional bears, all going about their business of fishing. Of course it goes without saying that whilst the bears were absolutely fine with me this particular stretch of remote river was about as close to hell as you could imagine for any passing salmon, the gauntlet of bears that they were having to endure living testimony to the fact that luck, and little else is often what guides our respective random paths through life.
